Although no one is certain where the origins of vodka started, is seems that everyone is in competition to claim that their country is the birthplace of this fine spirit. Two countries are believed to be in the running to be the birthplace of vodka, they are Russia and Poland. Both countries drink vodka regularly at meals and it seems as though the word vodka is derived from the Russian work voda. Vodka is believed to be born around the twelfth century and was thought to be invented for medical purposes. It was used for a whole century until it was found that vodka had intoxicating characteristics then around the thirteenth century was vodka introduced for drinking purposes and families started making this drink and so it is the start of vodka as we know it today.
Vodka was originally produced from the rye plant and then it was found that the potato would be more readily attainable and thus became the main ingredient. Things have drastically changed in the distilling of this popular drink in the past centuries. Vodka now is widely produced from barley, wheat, potato, rye and the most common is corn. Vodka is distilled in massive quantities and at a very high proof scale. The high proof vodka is then filtered through vegetable charcoal to reduce its potency. The higher up the proof scale vodka is, the less flavor and the clearer it becomes. This may explain the difficulty in distillers who are the experts that when they have that secret sweet spot, they truly have a masterpiece on their shelves.

Ted says:Great site. I am a vodka drinker and I will be checking on a daily basis to see more updates. I really hope this site takes off because I enjoy drinking and talking vodka. My drink of choice is a dirty grey goose martini with three blue cheese olives. The dirtier the better! I also love to drink grey goose and tonic with limes. It is a very refreshing drink. My wife loves the French martini. It is shaken belvedere with a splash of chambord. She loves it. Take care and we will see vodkas.com soon.
